They are unique and a real pleasure to collect or still use.

The item in this listing has the following characteristics:

This is a French Catholic Rosary dating from 1919 with 7 rare medals in precious metals.

This large rosary with blodstone beads and Vermeil cross and center dates from 1919 as may be witnessed from the First Communion Medal.
As was the custom at the time, rosaries accompanied their owner most of the time, many medals were added to the rosary as the owner made pilgrimages or received medals as present.

The final aspect is an awesome item with great attractiveness.

Blood Stone or Heliotrope is a green Gemstone with blood red streaks that was used in Rosaries as the red streaks reminded of the Blood of Christ.

1. 10.56 mm average dia. Gemstone Blood stone ( Heliotrope) beads for the Ave Marias and same 11.6 mm beads, but Vermeil capped, for the Pater Nosters, also in same gemstone.
Vermeil is Sterling silver electroplated with Gold.

2. All metal parts of this rosary are Vermeil : Chains, Center, Bead caps, rings, and Crucifix.

3. Attached to the Rosary are 7 rare medals made of different precious metals described in detail here below.

4. Vermeil main cross , 55 x 35 mm without the bail. Please look at the picture closely.

5. Total length : 60 cm (24 in.) -- Total weight : a very substantial and rarely seen 119 grams - !!!!
The rosary is quite large and It will easily go over the head to be eventually worn. It is a large item.

6. The 7 medals on this rosary are as follows : please look att detailed pictures closely.

a) The nearest to the cross is a Virgin Mary Medal. It is in 18 K solid Gold and weighs 1.8 grams
b) The one after it is Sterling 1 st Communion Medal with a pure Gold Chalice. On the reverse is written Gisèle and 29 May 1919.
c) The 3rd Medal is an Immaculate Virgin metal which has FIX stamp representing a company founded by François Savard. They were well known for their heavily gold foiled jewelry. They used brass jewelry and
they applied a heavy 14 or 18 carat gold foil over it. They also made lots of art nouveau-style jewelry. FIX jewelry is reputed to withstand long-term wear and be easily mistaken for real gold. The FIX hallmark
and the Savard hallmark may be seen on the upper bail ring.
d) The four other medals are sterling Silver. They are Souvernirs from : St Regis, Our Lady of Monteserrat, Lourdes and St Anne d'Auray.

This item is exceptional and of high rarity- practically unique; it is over 100 years old and still in excellent sturdy condition, with very little signs of use. Large and with a lot of antique and very rare Sterling Silver and 18 K. Solid Gold medals.
